Immigration Fear
Immigration was at a high in 1919 leading up to the 1920s. Americans weren't too happy about this at all, therefore many strikes began, different non-immigration groups formed and immigration restriction acts were passed. For example the Emergency Quota Act was made due to the thousands of immigrants and aliens coming over. This act restricted immigration to only 3% of the total population of a race to enter U.S. at a time. [100 people, 3 new enter] This was in hopes to keep immigration down, but didnt completly work. An alien was the name given to a person immigrating to the U.S. illegally and not becoming a citizen.
Americans began to fear immigrants becuase they believed they were here to take their jobs away. Nativism began to spread across American beucase of this fear. Nativism was extreme rudeness and violence towrds immigrants. The Ku Klux Klan was a groupd that formed, who opposed immigrants and others liek African Americans. They followed through with nativism by making immigrants live in fear and keeping them from getting civil rights. Immigrants that decided to come to the U.S. had to live in fear from the Americans becuase Americans would take their fear out on them.

Women had a big impact on voting in the 1920s. women's suffrage was a big issue. the 19th amendment gave wmen the right to vote. Before the 19th passed the Leagues of Women Voters gave women the right to vote. The Nation Women's Party tried to help women get more rights.
During this time women's style changed as well. The Gibson girls who wore long dresses and showed little skin was the normal women. But in the 1920s flappers were more common. Flappers were women who wore short dresses, and no sleve shirts. All of these qualities changed the role of women in society. Flappers lived on the edge and did risky things. They were percieved as sluts because of how they lived and what they looked like. Flappers drove the car instead of the man driving. They also partied in their free time. They drank, smoke, and wore a lot of make-up.

In the 1920s the roles of women were changed by several events.Women were considered as a second class . They claimed for their rights and , mainly , for suffrage. when the 14th and 15th amendments were passed , leaders from the Woman Suffrage Movement created the National Women´s Party .It was a political party that would be stronger in their fight to get the right to vote .After the WWI,considering the help that women gave to the nation by working as replaced men workers ,nursering ,office work and much more , they got a constitutional amendment finally .The 19th Amendment .
After WWI , as a new considered and recognized class , women changed their lifestyle in all areas .The roles changed. Not only men would be able to go to college or have job opportunities. Now , also women would have that independence , higher education and professional chances . They showed these changes in the clothing they used and fashion was affected .A new style came:"the Flapper Girl ". They would use short skirts , hats without brims , no sleeves and they smoked cigarettes and made use of the automobile which allowed them to have more freedom of desplacement. They left behind the "Gibson Girl" which would never show her skin. Women also contributed in the important area of science and literature.Women like Willa Cather and Edna Ferber got the Pulitzer prizes in their fight for women rights.

There was some economic prosperity in the United States duing the 1920's. Welfare capitalism which allowed company workers to buy stock and participate in profit sharing and recieved medical care and pensions. People were also allowed to use credit, which they could take money out of the bank. Speculation, people would bet the market would continue to climb, which they made money quickly. Installment buying allowed people to pay for a puchase over a period of time.
The was some negative and positive prosperity for people in their daily lives in the 1920's. The standard of living rose dramatically. Many people bought consumer goods which helped industries. There was more leisure time for the people of the middle class because they had shortened work hours. Farmers, minorities and new immigrants, unfortunately, had trouble finding jobs and were not as prosperous as other people were during the 1920s.

This is similar to my topic of women's rights because it displays prosperity and a changing of lifestyle for many people. It helps explain my topic because it describes people's bettering of lifestyle and how, with the money that was now available to them, they can do so much more. It shows how life in the 20s was very prosperous for most people in the United States.

During the 1920's women lives transformed significantly. The roaring twenties changed women's cultures, characteristics, and the perception people had of them. Women named Flappers were born in this unique period. Flappers were women who tried to change the opinion everyone had of the regular woman. They wore skimpy clothing and wanted to try risky and dangerous actions. Included in these actions were driving a car, smoking, drinking, and talking about their sexuality. This was usually an obscure sight to see but it opened doors for women everywhere. Flappers were self-reliant and wanted others to see them that way.
Also in this era there were groups of people who fought towards women's suffrage. Suffrage menat that women would get the right to vote, and many people deemed that necessary. Associations like the National Womens Party and the League of Womens Voters thought it was unfair that women were last to recieve the right to vote. These groups held strikes and picketed many times. Some women were upset that Afircan Americans had recieved the right to vote before them since women were citizens first. Finally though, the 19th amendment was put into place, allowing women the right to vote; making them feel like full blown citizens.

The twenties were a time of dramatic change in society, partly because of the effect of women. Flappers in particular changed the lifestyle that women were expected to conform to. Their skimpy clothing and strive for independence set a different light on how women should act. In many cases flapper women would drive cars, which was otherwise unheard of for that day in age. These actions may have been looked down upon at the time, but they also helped open many doors that led to women's complete freedom.
However, the flappers were not the only people that contributed to the changes of the twenties. Both the National Womens Party and the League of Womens Voters fought for women's suffrage. The right to vote was one of many rights women had been deprived of up to this point in time. As the National Womens Party fought for freedom, the League of Womens Voters were protesting for suffrage. Both these acts gave women much more pull in the political world and also contributed to the way society sees women today.

Women's suffrage was a big situation in the 1920's. Women did not have many rights until the National Women's party was created to push for voting rights. After the 19th amendment was passed, citizens in the U.S gained the right to vote in any state without being denied by what sex they are. Women believed that it was their birth right to vote. Flappers were not viewed as "good people." They dressed in flesh-colored silk stockings, and they tried to copy the glamorous life-styles of movie stars. They wore skimpy clothing and were very independent.
Women's roles in society changed in many ways. They contributed to the war efforts immensely. Women replaced the men’s jobs when they went to fight in the war. Usually women became nurses or in the medical field, law, literature, scientists, and worked in the military. When cars became popular, women got in a lot of trouble. It encouraged girls to escape the watch of their parents and it gave them freedom. There was an increase in education around the U.S. As money income increased though, more careless spending occurred. As women gained more freedom, Margaret Sanger created the Birth Control League. It was created to inform women about pregnancy and prevention. A couple of famous women of the time were; Willa Cather and Edna Ferber, they created novels and informed many women which created many beliefs that women deserved to have more rights.

This helps support my topic of reasons why there was great social tension during the 1920's. There were many how saw this uprising in women as a threat and a lead to too many complications against the old way of normal life.

In the 1920's economic prosperity was everywhere but somtimes unevenly distributed throughout the population. For example, metal and vehicle businesses boomed during World War 1. This is because the war demanded weaponry, vehicles, and equipment made of metal. Soon after the war ended these factories and their worker's prosperity ended too. The men fighting in the war came home and replaced the factory workers. Native americans were excluded from the prosperity also. When the united states expanded and built on the native americans lands, they had to put the native americans on reservations. These reservations had little profitable work available on them for the natives.
Farmers were a big part of the 1920's prosperity and "quiet depression". During the time of WW1 farmers profited greatly. Demand for farmers plants and crops was high because fighting service men needed food over seas. New technology enabled farmers to produce goods and a much better rate, giving them better profits at one point but then this hurt them in the future. Things took a turn for the worst for the farmers after the war ended. Demand was way down while supply was still booming. This caused prices to drop drasticly and profits went down wiith it.

The roaring 20's were called roaring because there was a lot going on. Many people wanted to pass prohibition or a ban on alcohol. Eventually it was passed. But people just went to secret bars called speakeasies. Many people like Al Capone made a lot of money off the illegal alcohol trade. They also corrupted officials. Later prohibition was repealed.
The 20's were also called roaring because of peoples' opinions of evolution. Some people thought we evolved and others thought God created us. It was illegal to teach evolution. In the Scopes trial, John T. Scopes volunteered to teach evolution but got arrested. He was later found guilty.

The 20s were called roaring because it seemed like "one big party." New activities like sports an the radio were introduced and the made life more fun and enjoyable. Prohibition had caused quite a stir. The point of prohibition was to stop crimes but it only caused more crime. Al Capone was a gangster notorious for selling illegal alcohol. To get alcohol people would sometimes go to speakeasies. These were bars that sold illegal alcoholic beverages. In the end the 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st amendment.
Women felt it was a party because of newly invoked rights. They were allowed to vote and had there rights were equal to men. They wore a style known as the flappers style. "The style expressed the sense of freedom many women felt in the 1920s." Another reason the 20s were "roaring" was the Harlem renaissance. After the great migration many African Americans were living in the north. They brought with them from the south artistic ideas of poetry and music like jazz or blues.

Communism was a very large threat to the United states during the 1900's. Communism was spreading in many nations across the world. Which became known as the Red Scare, the fear of a worker revolution and political radicalism. Communism was the belief in a "social political movement that aims for a stateless and classless societry structured upon common ownership of the means of production, free access to articles of consumption, the end of wage labor and private property in the means of production and real estate. Communism was spreading very fast.
The increase in communism was leading to more and more anarchists. Anarchists are people who oppose all forms of government. The threat of communism was scaring many people. The parranoia led to the palmer raids. The palmer raids were raids against the foreign born and various radical groups because of the threat of bombers with no definite evidence of what group was leading the possible bombers. The citizens did not care though, they were just afraid and wanted to keep their government.

During the 1920's and after WW1 women had many opportunities opened for them. some of those opportunities were they took mens jobs during WW1, they were able to vote, they were aloud or started to dress more openly with got the nickname flappers. They were giving the right to vote witch was called womens suffrage or in the form of the 19th amendment. There were many other "freedoms that women acquired during this period of time.
They got all of the rights or freedoms as sort of payments for there efforts during WW1. During the war women had jobs in factories making supplies for the military. Such as ammunition, weapons, and food. They were also nurses during the war tending to the wounded soldiers.

this writing is similar to mine in the sense that people were afraid of immigrants coming to america because they were taking job opportunities away. competition for employment grew so much more during the 1920's because the foreign groups came to america. this helps explain my topic in the sense that this all started during the post war. Loss of jobs to foreign immigrants left a huge impact on the prosperity of the 1920's. This describes tyhe 1920's very clearly because it shows the racial tensions, job losses and chaos that went on during this time in america.
